Flood Alleviation

AXIS has played a pivotal role in some of the most innovative flood alleviation projects to have been developed in the UK in recent years, founded on extensive experience of working for the Environment Agency and its engineering consultants on schemes dating back to the mid-1990s.

AXIS has provided services on schemes in northwest England and in north Wales including major projects for Warrington, Carlisle, Wigan and Salford and smaller schemes for Croston, Connahs Quay, Abergele and Porthmadog.  It has worked on river enhancement schemes to aid otter establishment on the River Weaver, Cheshire and has guided proposals to reduce sedimentation on the rivers flowing into Bassenthwaite Lake, Cumbria, aiming to protect rare populations of Vendace.  AXIS prepared the Environment Agency National Guidance on landscape and environmental design and provides environmental clerk of works services to oversee implementation of work in sensitive locations.

AXIS adds value to the development of flood alleviation schemes through its combined knowledge and experience of:

  • Planning – feasibility and outline design stages; public consultation events; key stakeholder engagement; planning authority negotiations; and submission of planning applications/ condition details;
  • EIA – screening and scoping of EIA; coordination of specialist surveys and impact assessments; landscape and visual impact assessments; photomontages; and
  • Design – masterplans; opportunities for enhancement; soft and hard landscape design and specification services; site supervision.

AXIS has innovated the preparation of a ‘design vision’ at the outset of a flood defence project, which sets out key environmental and design quality aspirations for the scheme so that these don’t become lost in developing the technical engineering solution.  The ‘design vision’ has been found to: reassure regulatory authorities of the finished quality; assist discussion with the client over cost setting; and guide the engineer through detailed design.  AXIS has also developed a particular expertise in developing sympathetically designed exposed concrete finishes for flood walls incorporating artwork inspired by schools and the local community.

Flood alleviation schemes for Carlisle and Wigan have been successful in winning numerous national awards for their design innovation and contribution towards place making.
